Today's Edinburgh has a reputation for being staid and aloof, but things were different a couple of centuries ago. Laird and commoner lived in close proximity in the closes and luckenbooths of the Old Town. Much of this richness of life was lost, however, when Craig's plans for a classical new Town were put into effect. The nobility had already moved to London or withdrawn to their country estates following Union with England in 1707, and now the middle class lawyers and merchants packed their bags and crossed the new North Bridge to form a genteel society that has left an indelible mark on Edinburgh's way of life. There are also a few more modern tales, and an interlude devoted to the curious belief that the capital was the scene of even more colourful events than those the history books already describe.
